Hunger Heroes is The Urban Mission’s newest program designed to allow donors to get a taste of volunteering while gaining insight as to where their financial gift goes. We want those who are generous enough to donate to be able to tangibly understand what their money does within our organization. To that end, we’ve created the Hunger Heroes program, giving groups the opportunity to spend some time serving alongside our staff.
What many don’t know is that we do not subsist entirely on donations–we have to purchase food each week from the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. Through our partnership with them, we have access to USDA and low-cost items. This helps us ensure our money stretches as far as possible, but we do still have to make a purchase. The Hunger Heroes project allows donors to provide a financial gift in the range of $500 to $1,000 to cover the costs of the order for a weekly food distribution. The group will then have the opportunity to come volunteer in our Food & Resource Center and give out the very food they provided. We believe that it makes a difference for volunteers to see the faces of those they are helping.
